Prof. Fariji Daniel Mtango MD (USSR), DTM&H, DPH, MSPH (California, USA)Principal

Prof. Fariji Daniel Mtango graduated as Medical Doctor at Kharkov, USSR, in June, 1969. After internship in England, he served as Medical Director of Heri Adventist Hospital in Kasulu, Tanzania, 1971 to 1974. With interest in Public Health, he completed postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London, 1974, Diploma of Public Health, University of Dares Salaam, 1975, Master of Science in Public Health, Loma Linda University, California, 1976. After this he served as Lecturer 1976-9, Senior Lecturer, Head of Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, 1979-1986 and Director, Institute of Primary Health Care and Continuing Education (1986-2000) in what is now the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Health Sciences (MUHAS) from 1986-2000.

Prof. Mtango was the first Epidemiologist and founder of the first Department of Epidemiology of a university in East Africa, which has resulted in making MUHAS a “Research Hub” in East Africa. He pioneered in the initiation of control programs for Cholera in Tanzania and Mozambique and the development of Primary Health Care programs in Tanzania, namely, Acute Respiratory Infections Control Program using Community Health Care Workers. He has published 17 Scientific Papers and facilitated many WHO and UNICEF sponsored Primary Health Care training courses in Ethiopia, Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Currently Prof. Mtango has research interest in use of diet and natural remedies for prevention of malnutrition and anemia in children and pregnant women and the prevention of adult regenerative diseases through lifestyle.

Prof. Fariji Daniel Mtango joined at International Medical and Technological University in 2012 as Head of Department of Community Medicine and later served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He has broad experience in teaching, administration and is the 1st and current Principal at VIST.
